Mick says: “Hello, my name is Mick Lyons and I am standing as your Labour candidate in the Binstead and Fishbourne by-election on 23rd June 2011

I am standing in this election because I can offer a genuinely strong voice for YOU in County Hall. Speaking on your behalf, raising your concerns, making sure that that the residents of Binstead and Fishbourne have real representation and not just someone to toe the line as dictated by the Leader of the Council

I know that many residents feel let down by the Conservative controlled Isle of Wight Council. If you want someone to stand up for YOU in County Hall you can count on me”

Why vote Labour?

In the Ryde area the Isle of Wight’s Conservative Council have:

  • Withdrawn support for, and tried to close, the Waterside Swimming Pool
  • Closed Ryde’s tourist information office
  • Closed public toilets, including those at Binstead cemetery – now being kept open by Ryde Town Council
  • Handed over allotments and the skatepark to Ryde Town Council
  • This has resulted in a 52% increase in the Ryde Town Council precept this year

On the Island the Isle of Wight’s Conservative Council have:

  • Withdrawn or reduced funding for local libraries, including Ryde Library. Many smaller libraries look set to close
  • Withdrawn support for many rural bus services
  • Wasted money on an expensive PFI roads scheme and the abandoned Ryde Interchange.
  • Planned to charge elderly residents for care in their own homes
  • Threatened the future of youth centres and care homes – e.g. Ryde Youth Centre and Adelaide Centre

The Council have promised more cuts next year and the year after, this might include:

  • Closing Sure Start centres
  • Selling off Council property – open spaces like Pell Lane and buildings like Greenmount School
  • Parks and gardens maintenance left to Parish Councils
  • Increased charges for the disabled and the elderly

The Conservative Council, supported by Liberal Democrat and Independent allies, have failed Isle of Wight residents with mismanaged schemes and ruthless spending cuts.

The Labour Party believes that:

  • We should reject the defeatist mantra that "there is no alternative"
  • We can create a fair society in which wealth and opportunity go to those who deserve them
  • We can build an economy that reflects the best of our values as a country
  • We can secure for our children the opportunity to lead more prosperous and fulfilling lives
  • We can have the confidence to stand up for the things we really love about Britain

Now is the time to vote  Labour.
