MARK CHIVERTON
Isle of Wight Labour Party Candidate for the 2010 General Election
MARK CHIVERTON, the Isle of Wight Labour candidate for the forthcoming General Election, is confident that he can make a sound challenge to bring about a genuinely fresh start for the Island electorate.
"Recent times have called for tough Government decisions, with our Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown having to deal with a worldwide economic crisis of almost unprecedented proportions," he says.
"In spite of this, Labour has continued to prioritise spending on front line services and will not engage in a Conservative-crazed competition to see who can be the most savage with their cuts.
"Investment in health, schools, childcare and care for the elderly is essential to a civilised society. All of these would all be put at risk by the Tories and the Liberal Democrats."
Mark joined the Labour Party in 1979 and was Chair of the Isle of Wight Labour Party for almost 10 years. As the Labour Candidate in 2005 he achieved the highest Labour vote on the Island for 35 years.
His commitment to Labour and the working man was exemplified by his strong support recently for the action by Vestas staff over redundancies by the wind-turbine specialist group.
Mark's emphasis on the need for wind power as a vital alternative energy source contrasts starkly with the position taken by some other politicians .
Mark's abilities and achievements are wide-ranging, but seldom reported in the Press. Aged 55, Mark was born in Newport, educated at Barton and West Street Primary Schools, Newport, and then at Carisbrooke High School. Today he is a governor at Mayfield CE Middle School.
Mark is a widower and lives with his two children (both at local schools) in Ryde. He has been employed by the Isle of Wight Council since 1973 where he has had considerable experience working in both education and social services on the Island.
Not only is Mark the full-time Secretary of the Island's 1,800-strong UNISON trade union branch - the largest trade union Branch on the Island - but he is also a leading and significant trade unionist in the South East Region.
In addition Mark has also been UNISON's South East Regional Convenor for more than 15 years and has been active in a number of significant local and national campaigns throughout this period.
Cllr Geoff Lumley, the Constituency Labour Party Agent on the Island, said: "With his strong local roots, his vast experience in the Labour movement, and his impressive track record as an advocate for ordinary working people, the Isle of Wight Labour movement is confident of building on the excellent vote Mark achieved at the last General Election.
"We are challenging strongly to win the seat."
