Press Release - 6th January 2010
A NEW YEAR MESSAGE FROM
MARK CHIVERTON
LABOUR'S GENERAL ELECTION CANDIDATE
2010 is going to be a very busy and eventful year for the Isle of Wight. The main reason is that the Labour Party on the Island is expecting a General Election to be called at any time, probably sooner rather than later. Indications are that it could be as early as March.
Voters will face a stark choice. In spite of attempts by David Cameron to disguise the Conservatives' true nature, it is evident that the Tories are ready to embark on savage cuts in public spending, resulting in the devastation of our vital public services. As always, it is the disadvantaged – the unemployed, the single parents, the pensioners and the poorer people in our society – who will be the most adversely affected.
The Tory approach would plunge the country straight back into deep recession.
The Liberal Democrats are an irrelevance who still believe that their meaningless perennial tactic of urging a tactical vote would stop the Tories on the Island. They live in cloud cuckooland. Yet they are still lining up their Election strategy to vie with the Tories about who can cut spending the most.
Have the Liberal Democrats no heart, no compassion? Do they really want all our Islanders, most of whom are retired, to face even further erosion of their pensions and savings?
The trouble with both the Tories and the Lib Dems is that they fail to realise that you can cut costs centrally, but the ripples mean local authorities have to find extra money to fund essential services. That means higher Council Tax, for there is no other way.
Only Labour can be trusted to look after everyone; to continue the rebuilding of our essential public services – schools, hospitals, and social care – and to run the economy to make full employment and opportunities for the many a priority. The two other main parties would rather service the privileged few.
It's YOUR choice. Don't vote selfishly. Think of others in need.
I wish you all, my fellow Islanders, a better and brighter 2010 under Labour.
